Benefits of Exercise                                                                                              
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do for your health”. Research has shown that exercising can:
  • Reduce arthritis pain and stiffness
  • Increase energy
  • Control weight
  • Reduce risk of cardiovascular disease
  • Reduce risk for type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome
  • Reduce risk of some cancers
  • Strengthen bones and muscles
  • Improve mental health and mood
  • Improve ability to do daily activities and prevent falls
  • Increase chances of living longer

Exercise at our Senior Centers                                                                            
 

Exercising at the Senior Centers is done at the participants' own risk. We encourage participants to check with their doctor before increasing their activity through exercise. 

The Senior Centers in our area choose the type of exercise program(s) that work best for their facility and participants. Some centers use exercise tapes. Some have trained instructors. Many of the instructors that teach at our Senior Centers are volunteers. Some of the exercise programs include seated exercise classes, line dancing, low impact aerobics, stretching/flexibility classes, resistance training, Wii Bowling Leagues, Masters Games practice days, and walking. Some centers also have treadmills, stationary bicycles, Wii game systems, other equipment, and/or access to local Recreation Centers and programs.

Several Senior Centers have installed Wii game systems at their centers. Wii is a video game system that is controlled by the movement of the player. For example, Wii bowling (the most popular Wii game played in our Centers) is played by making the bowling motion while holding a Wii remote control.  These game systems have become a huge hit across the country because they are fun and encourage people to get up and be active.


Masters Games practice days have become very popular in some of our Senior Centers. These Masters Games practice days are days scheduled by the Senior Center to have fun and improve their skills for the upcoming District and State Masters Games. The Center schedules specific Masters Games of Alabama events to practice on these days, such as, Shuffleboard, Nerf and Frisbee Throw, Softball Throw, Basketball Free Throw, Rook, Dominoes, and Checkers.
